Dance & Silent Auction To Benefit YWCA DVIPP and Duncan Hall
The public is invited to attend the “Help from the Heart” Dance & Silent Auction from 6:30 to 10:00 p.m. on Friday, February 12, at Duncan Hall, 619 Ferry Street, Lafayette. This charitable event benefits the YWCA Domestic Violence Intervention & Prevention Program and Duncan Hall. The evening features the Jim Alkire Dance Band with Aura Lee, and Elizabeth Hendrickson will offer ballroom dance instruction (specifically, the waltz) from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. Individuals, couples, and beginners are welcome. Gourmet desserts and a gourmet coffee bar will be donated by local restaurants including Jane’s Gourmet Deli, Spurlock’s, Skylight Coffee House, Sovereign Catering, and Yellow Bowl Bakery. Various local merchants are donating items for the silent auction. “Help from the Heart” is sponsored by Bill Defouw Chevrolet-BMW, INTAC, Dr. Susan Snyder DDS, and Holly Thomas of F.C. Tucker/Lafayette REALTORS. Admission is $20 per person. A limited number of tables of four or tables of eight may be purchased. Learn How to Expand Your Food Dollars
Registered dietitian Melissa Maulding will speak at the Monday, January 25th Network Luncheon. Her topic will be “Expanding Your Food Dollars.” She will discuss where your money goes, spending leaks, and some strategies for stretching your dollars. Maulding is a staff trainer with the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Nutrition Education Programs. The luncheon will be held from 11:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the YWCA, 605 N. 6th Street, Lafayette. The cost is $12 per person. Reservations are due by noon on Friday, January 22. Call 765-742-0075. Mental Health Advocate to Speak at February 8 Luncheon
Bernie Seaman, chair of the Mental Health America of Tippecanoe County Board of Trustees, will speak at the Monday, February 8th Network Luncheon. Her topic will be “Mental Health Advocacy.” She will discuss how she became involved with mental health issues and what services MHA offers. Her goal is to encourage awareness and erase the stigma often associated with mental illness. The luncheon will be held from 11:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the YWCA, 605 N. 6th Street, Lafayette. Speaker Explains Why Women Should Enter Technology Fields
Mary Sadowski, associate dean for undergraduate programs with the Purdue University College of Technology, will speak at the Monday, February 22nd Network Luncheon. Her topic will be “Power of the Purse: Why We Need Women in Technology.” Women control over $13 trillion of the world’s annual consumer spending but account for only a small percentage of the decision makers in industry. Sadowski will discuss the buying power of women and why it is so important for young women to enter into technology fields. Volunteer Opportunities Highlighted at January 20th Callout
Learn how you can volunteer for the YWCA! There will be a volunteer callout from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 20, at the YWCA, 605 N. 6th Street, Lafayette. This callout is for ages 18 and up and will highlight volunteer needs for each department and our special events. New Session of Women’s Choices Class Starts January 25
The YWCA Domestic Violence Intervention and Prevention Program will start a new session of the Choices class on Monday, January 25. The class will meet 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. every Monday for 16 weeks at the YWCA’s 604 N. 6th Street, Lafayette, location. Choices is a class for women. Participants learn techniques and skills for dealing with anger management, communication and personal relationships. Topics also include the effects of domestic violence on interpersonal relationships. For more information or to register, call 765-423-4486.
YWCA Invites Women to ‘On Our Own’ Support Group
Women of any age who are divorced, widowed, or on their own after the end of a long-term relationship are invited to join the YWCA’s new “On Our Own” Support Group. The group will meet 6:00-7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, February 2-March 9, in the YWCA 604 Training Room at 604 N. 6th Street, Lafayette. The format will include practical information you can apply on a daily basis, in addition to discussion and support. Topics will include coping with loss, finances, self-esteem, redefining identity, cooking for one, and more. The group facilitator will be Beth Goodman, the owner of Effective Connections. She is an experienced professional life coach, trainer, meeting facilitator and counselor. She holds a master’s degree in career development and community counseling and a bachelor’s degree in psychology, sociology and women’s studies. In order to foster a sense of community and receive maximum benefit from the process, participants are strongly encouraged to attend all six support group sessions. Continuing Education Program Offered on ‘Today’s Marijuana’
Carla Gaff-Clark, Ed.D., LMHC, CADAC IV, will lead a continuing education program on today’s marijuana and the impact it is having on our society as well as the potential impact if Indiana were to legalize marijuana for medicinal purposes. The program will take place from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 25, at the YWCA, 605 N. 6th Street, Lafayette. The training includes a short lecture, a video, group work, and practice activities. A more detailed description is available at www.ywca.org/lafayette/dv. This training session is appropriate for social service providers and other professionals who work with at-risk clients. However, all interested adults ages 18 and up are welcome and encouraged to attend to share information, experiences, and concerns. This training has been certified by the Indiana Professionals Bureau. Three continuing education units are available. Gaff-Clark is contracted through the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence. Kids’ Night Out Offered on February 12
Children ages 3-11 are invited to participate in a Kids’ Night Out from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, February 12, at the YWCA, 605 N. 6th Street, Lafayette. The evening includes pizza, gym time, a movie, and snacks. The cost is $20 per child and $15 per sibling. The registration deadline is Wednesday, February 10. For more information, call 765-742-0075. Other KNO dates are March 5 and April 9.
National Girls & Women in Sports Day Overnighter Scheduled for February 5-6
The annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day Overnighter will be held from 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 5 through 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 6, at the YWCA, 605 N. 6th Street, Lafayette. This overnight event is for girls in grades 5-12 and will include sports workshops and recreational activities. This year the theme of National Girls and Women in Sports Day is “Stay Strong – Play On!” The cost is $20 per person through January 29 and $25 per person after January 29. Participants should wear comfortable shoes, bring a sleeping bag, and eat dinner before arriving. The YWCA will provide beverages, snacks and breakfast. ECHO After-School Program Continues
The ECHO After-School Program is available at the YWCA for young people in grades K-8. ECHO stands for Education, Confidence, Health and Outreach. The program is open from 3:00 to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the YWCA, 605 N. 6th Street, Lafayette. The fee is $65 per week.
